    Scott Thomson

    MANAGING DIRECTOR

    Scott has more than 45 years experience in the mining and energy sectors. He has worked as a private consultant in the resource industry since 1998 specialising in coal seam gas and technology development. Mr. Thomson has managed several small service businesses in addition to being involved in the development of advanced geological, drilling, and geophysical technologies. Over the past 25 years, his focus has been on private consulting and research activities related to coal seam gas, geology, and drilling technology.

    Mr. Thomson was a joint winner – with Mr. Steve Hennings - of the prestigious Stefanko Award for ‘Best Paper’ at the 2007 SME Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA for a paper titled “A Petroleum Industry Approach to Coal Mine Gas Drainage”.

    Scott also won ‘Best Paper’ at the 2024 Sydney Basin Symposium for a paper titled “Yabby – New Technology for Understanding Geology and the Gas Reservoir".

    Scott holds a BSc in Geology from the University of Newcastle, MSc University of New England, and an M.B.A. from Deakin University.

  • Duncan Thomson

    PROJECT DIRECTOR

    Duncan is a geologist and a professional project manager with practical, hands-on industrial experience in mining and unconventional gas. For the last twenty years, he has specialised in the execution and delivery of complex, technology-driven drilling and gas reservoir projects. Duncan is a founding Director of CoalBed Innovations, holder of the Yabby GeoSensing and GasReservoir Systems IP, and has been with the CoalBed Group of companies since 2008.

    Duncan has project managed several mining and CSG-related projects in major Australian coal basins and overseas, many in remote locations. He has experience in coal seam geology, coal mining, exploration, directional drilling, coal seam gas, geotechnical engineering, safety systems and project management. 

    Duncan's current professional interests include fugitive emission estimation, capture, mitigation, and gas storage, as well as the development and delivery of Yabby technology projects to an expanding client base in Australia and North America.

    Duncan holds a BSc in Geology from the University of Newcastle, a Masters of Mining Engineering from the University of NSW and an International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) WellCAP – Supervisor Certificate (UNSW).

    RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

    Duncan M (DCM) is the R & D Director of CoalBed Innovations Pty Limited. DCM is a relentless innovator in the areas of drilling, drilling services and operations geology across the mining, civil and oil and gas industries. Finding, building and implementing alternate approaches or building new tools, teams and workflows are DCM’s specialty. DCM has worked within local service companies as well as large international operating companies and has a particular focus on the delivery of digital simplification, digital services and automation into field operations.
